INDUSTRY NEWS: Delays at the Port of Felixstowe

Monday, 17th September 2020

Dear Valued Customer

We find ourselves in the difficult position of having to apologise to our customers who have consignments booked with us that are arriving at the Port of Felixstowe. The service disruption we are experiencing via the Port of Felixstowe is completely out of our control and is leading to frustration and additional cost to our customers.

The Port of Felixstowe have now informed us that they are not accepting the restitution of empty containers until further notice. This has and will continue to cause delays in the delivery of customers consignments. When combined with a lack of booking slots on the Ports system (VSB) and long delays loading, once a collection slot has been secured the supply chain is struggling and service expectations are being missed. It has been offered that Inland container ports (ICD) will accept the restitution of empty boxes neither of which is practical nor cost efficient.

Despite us pushing back to both the port and the shipping lines, we are advised that neither will wave demurrage or detention costs and as such the consignee will be liable for the charges.

On behalf of us all at FS Mackenzie we apologise for this service short fall and additional cost you may incur, but trust that you understand that the situation is not one of our making and despite our strongest representations we are at the mercy of the Port of Felixstowe and the shipping lines that the port serves.

Your import handler will keep you advised as the situation evolves.
